The New Zealand Dark Sky Network is advocating for national level legislation to reduce light pollution and preserve dark skies. If successful, New Zealand would join France and Croatia as the only countries with national laws to control light pollution. New Zealand currently has 5 Dark Sky places which have created a boom in astrotourism, resulting in an additional 12 aspiring communities. The document Why New Zealand needs a law to reduce light pollution and promote dark skies provides a comprehensive overview of light pollution issues that apply anywhere as well as the particular issues related to New Zealand. We applaud the New Zealand Dark Sky Network for thinking big!
